It is fitting that an African-American artist, George Olden, designed the stamp commemorating the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Olden was the first African American to design a U.S. postage stamp. This stamp was issued Aug ERROLL GARNER. The first U.S. stamp to honor an African American was the ten-cent Booker T.
