Read Peter McPhee's essay on writing a "human" biography of Robespierre on the Yale Press Log. For some historians and biographers, Maximilien Robespierre (–94) was a great revolutionary martyr who succeeded in leading the French Republic to safety in the face of overwhelming military odds.
Maximilien Robespierre is one of the best-known and most influential figures of the French Revolution. He was instrumental in the period of the Revolution commonly known as the Reign of Terror, which ended with his arrest and execution in Brand: Verso Books.
Despite the ceaseless rise and fall of parties and programmes which invariably brought the radical trend to the fore, the class content of the French revolution never ceased to be bourgeois in character. Robespierre's faction was merely the most consistently revolutionary of the petit-bourgeois trends that dominated the Convention.
Robespierre's opponents attempted a conciliation with the Incorruptible, even winning Saint-Just to their side. Robespierre apparently agreed on 4th Thermidor (July 22), but on 8th Thermidor (July 26) denounced his opponents before the Convention to thunderous applause.
It seemed the Incorruptible would soon add "the Invincible" to his name. The Directory regime, which came to power in after the fall of Robespierre, was known for its tenuous hold on power and the more relaxed atmosphere it supported within French society after the oppressive years of the Terror.

Description fall of Robespierre PDF
Considering the limited amount of information available on the subject, I found this book to be rather informative and not just another recycled version of an older book. Ruth Scurr delves into the conflicted mind of Robespierre and examines the French revolutionary's descent from man of the people to murderous tyrant.5/5(5).
Robespierre in the first weeks of the Revolution was already, in his own words, “unmasking the enemies of the country.” Robespierre stoked such fanaticism in others, which created a nasty feedback loop of encouraging further paranoia and purity, in a story that’s repeated itself many times before and since.L'école des factieux, des peuples et des rois; ou Supplément a l'histoire des conjurations de Louis-Philippe-Joseph d'Orleans & de Maximilien Robespierre, par un témoin oculaire.
